It’s the Chinese New Year season, and the annual Hougang Chinese New Year Bazaar has descended on my neighborhood. We decided to take a walk at the Pasar Malam after dinner tonight.
To the Aussies, Austrians, Americans, and other non-initiated amongst us, the Pasar Malam is Malay for Night Bazaar. Thats a travelling troop of small scale entrepreneurs selling services or goods making visits to neighborhoods around Singapore. The Children are always excited to head down to the Pasar Malams because they get to go on rides!
.
You can even find a Koala Bear here.
If you are looking for imitation goods such as Disney/Cartoon shirts, bags, stickers, CDs, knick knacks, you’ll likely find them at your local Pasar Malam.
Umbrellas, Hello Kitty memorabilia, Disney Princess raincoats, maybe even stuff you can’t find in the original stores down at Orchard Road!
I really don’t know why, and I’m thinking I’ll set aside some time to think about it soon, but Chris has a very unhealthy obsession with Red Packets, or rather, collecting Red Packets. You should see my home drawer stuffed with un-used packets. Here you see her greedy hands going for the Hello Kitty Red Packets. She bought the lot by the way….. just kidding. S$2 dollars worth. 🙂
Apart from clothes and imitation goods, Pasar Malams are also packed with numerous stalls selling a large array of food. I think its illegal here, but the Ramly burger has made it across the causeway. I heard it’ll give Maccas and Burger King a run for its money, but I haven’t really tried it before.
This is a new one I have never seen before. Frozen carbonated popsicles!!! Very enterprising! Tried Kyla and Ariel’s Fanta grape and mango popsicles. Really nice.
This is how it looks like after taking it out of the freezer
Got Kebabs also! But uncle got no business leh…
This is the famous Tea Eggs. Eggs that are soaked and cooked in tea. Nice meh??
Kachang Puteh!!! or… Steamed Peanuts. If you haven’t tried this before, you must! Its really really nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nonya Oyster Cakes
Not to forget the all time favorite….Kueh Tu Tu (loosely translated to Tu Tu Cakes) Its made entire out of coconut.
And.. because its Chinese New Year, you can also find New Year goodies… these are typical fruits/pods you can find, but I have absolutely no idea if they are meant to be eaten or if they are supposed to be only kept for decoration purposes. Some Chinese I am…
Hey… Got fishing also…
These are the mythical Chinese Dieties “Fu, Lu, Shou” who represent Prosperity, Success and Longevity
My God!! They’re even selling cars here!!!!
